Grumpy old gay men, transsexual prisoners and homosexual hip-hop artists.

The films in the first Birmingham Shout gay and lesbian film festival will feature all of those and more.

"It's a really diverse program that will appeal to a lot of different demographics," festival director Erik Jambor says.

Birmingham Shout takes place April 28-29 at WorkPlay, 500 23rd St. South.

Here is the feature and documentary lineup, with plot descriptions provided by festival organizers.

"Small Town Gay Bar." A documentary about the history and culture of gay bars in the rural South. (Opening night film.)

"Summer Storm." A coming-of-age story about two friends who deal with prejudice and hidden yearnings at a summer camp.

"Loving Annabelle." A lesbian romance about a Catholic boarding school teacher who has an affair with a student.

"When I'm 64." Two men - a retired schoolteacher and a gruff cabdriver - discover romance late in life.

"The Aggressives." A documentary about a group of lesbians who identify themselves as "aggressives" and take part in black lesbian drag shows.

"Be Real." The story of community heroes who stand by their convictions.

"Cruel & Unusual." A look at the lives of male-to-female transsexuals who have been placed in men's prisons.

"Gay Sex in the '70s." A documentary about the gay sexual revolution before the AIDS outbreak.

"Pick Up the Mic." A glimpse into the gay hip-hop underground music movement.
