Still Rolling: Women On A Roll, the Largest Lesbian Social Club in the West, Celebrates 10-year Milestone Aug. 13; Announces Plans for Nationwide Expansion
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LOS ANGELES, July 12, 2005--Where can women go to meet other women? Answering that question lead newly out lesbian Andrea Meyerson to make a decision more than a decade ago that would change not only her life but the lives of thousands of lesbians along the West Coast.
On Aug. 13, 2005, Women On A Roll, the lesbian social club founded by Andrea in 1995, will celebrate its 10th anniversary at the upscale Luxe Hotel Sunset Boulevard in Bel-Air and announce plans for a nationwide expansion of the organization. Originally established as a cycling club, Women On A Roll has grown to include 6,500 women on its mailing list, becoming the largest lesbian social club in the West offering group dinners and dances, excursions to concerts and shows, club-wide support of numerous LGBT events and fund-raisers (volunteering as a group for such organizations at LA Shanti), weekend rafting trips, overseas vacations, Singles Mingles, networking luncheons, hikes, book readings and, oh yes, bike rides.
For the first two years the club was Andrea's hobby. "I was working in the corporate world. After being out for several years and not finding much of a social outlet … I knew there must be other women who felt this way," she says.
WOAR's growth and success since then is a testament to the need and demand for such an outlet in the lesbian community. Keeping with the tradition of classy yet inclusive events for lesbians of all stripes, the August gala will bring together local dignitaries and hundreds of women who are members past and present and future, offering an evening of comedy and cocktails and dining and dancing at the exquisite seven-acre Luxe, nestled beneath the hilltop Getty Center. Discounted hotel rooms are optional for guests of the WOAR party. Tickets are $75 members; $95 nonmembers.
The idea for expanding WOAR beyond Southern California came from members who moved away but remained on the mailing list. "There was nothing like this where they lived," Andrea says. Women who hear about the group also frequently seek her advice. "People come out to events from other states asking how they can do this, so I tell them," she says. "It's all about empowering people."
Providing a way to package what Andrea has learned over the past 10 years and sharing it with other entrepreneurs in other states will streamline the efforts to start similar organizations, Andrea believes. "The hardest thing for me to learn was the business end," she says. Her dream, she adds with a hopeful laugh, is to one day "have an annual retreat where all the women from all the WOAR chapters come together for one amazing weekend."
Women On A Roll strives to enrich the lives of gay women--both couples and singles alike. Its membership represents women of all ages, backgrounds, ethnicity, professions and fitness levels, and brings them together in a fun and relaxed environment. The club is also committed to introducing worthy causes and charities to its members by producing, promoting and/or supporting special events that expand the awareness of our diverse and wonderful community.
