TALLAHASSEE — The Florida Supreme Court cleared the way Thursday for a GOP-backed constitutional amendment that would prohibit gay marriage to appear on a statewide ballot.

The proposed amendment defines marriage as "the legal union of only one man and one woman as husband and wife," effectively barring same-sex unions.

The group backing the initiative failed to collect the required number of signatures to get the measure on the ballot in November. But the unanimous court ruling that the proposed amendment meets constitutional and statutory muster means it likely will go before voters in 2008.

The Republican Party of Florida, by far the largest contributor to florida4marriage.org — the group behind the initiative —gave $300,000, and the Florida Baptist Convention gave $25,000.

"The governor has always felt that marriage is between a man and a woman," said Gov. Jeb Bush's spokeswoman, Alia Faraj.
