(Link) Begorrah! The Irish beat the English in the race to tie the same-sex knot. The couple gets bonus points for being one of those transcontinental romances that actually worked out.
Belfast: Lesbian lovers Shannon Sickels and Grainne Close became the first gay couple to get married in the United Kingdom as they tied the knot in Belfast City Hall.
The pair were the first to take advantage of the new civil partnership law as it came into force, allowing homosexual couples to obtain the same rights as heterosexual couples in areas such as employment, pension and inheritance.
Community worker Close (32) met American playwright Sickels (27), four years ago in New York.
“For us this is about making a choice to have our civil rights acknowledged and respected as any human being,” Close said.
“This is for all the people who went before us and all the people who would like to come after us,” added Sickels.
The law came into force in Northern Ireland yesterday, with Scotland to follow today and England and Wales on Wednesday.
