OSAKA -- A female member of the Osaka Prefectural Assembly is set to declare that she is homosexual.
It is extremely rare for an incumbent assembly member or Diet member to confess to being homosexual.
"Homosexual people have often kept silent for fear of discrimination and prejudice. By declaring I'm homosexual, I would like to highlight the problems and put an end to a vicious circle of discrimination and prejudice," Kanako Otsuji said.
Otsuji, 30, is poised to make the announcement during Tokyo Lesbian and Gay Parade 2005 to be held in Tokyo Saturday.
Moreover, she has authored an autobiography confessing that she is homosexual. "I believe that coming out as a homosexual is the best thing I can do to encourage numerous people," Otsuji says in her book soon to be published by Kodansha Ltd.
Otsuji, a member of the "Shuken (Sovereignty) Osaka" group of independent prefectural assembly members, is in her first four-year term.
