Amelie Mauresmo closed out the pro tennis season with her biggest career victory on Sunday at the WTA Championships in Los Angeles.
Mauresmo, an openly gay player from France, outlasted fellow Frenchwoman Mary Pierce in the grueling three-set final, 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-4. The match lasted three hours and six minutes.
After the final point Mauresmo sank to her knees and kissed the court floor. She then met Pierce at the net for a hug and a kiss on the cheek.
The WTA Championships is the last tournament of the season and is sometimes called "the fifth Grand Slam," ranking in prestige just below Wimbledon and the Australian, French and US Open tournaments.
Mauresmo earned a $1 million cash prize for her victory; Pierce won $500,000.
Mauresmo, 26, has never won a Grand Slam tournament. She came closest in 1999, losing in the final of the Australian Open.
A former Number 1-ranked player, Mauresmo ends the year ranked third in the WTA Tour rankings, behind Number 1 Lindsay Davenport and Number 2 Kim Clijsters.
