Country music icon Dolly Parton has revealed that she receives hate mail and threats because of her large gay fan base and support of the gay community.

The 60-year-old music legend, who is nominated for an Academy Award for her song ‘Travellin’ Thru’, which she wrote for the transgender themed film TransAmerica, has said in the past that she repeatedly is at odds with her country fan base over her support and acceptance of the gay community.

“Having a big gay following, I get hate mail and threats,” she said in an interview with USA Today.

“Some people are blind or ignorant, and you can't be that prejudiced and hateful and go through this world and still be happy. It's all right to be who you are.”

Parton will sing her Oscar nominated song at the ceremony next week. In it, she sings about following your own path to inner peace, a theme that speaks to all people, particularly the film’s main character, played by Felicity Huffman, who is days away from a final sex-change operation.

Meanwhile, on a lighter note, the blonde bombshell says she herself is no stranger to surgeries. She claims she has spent over $1 million on improving her cleavage.

“My cleavage isn't insured for $1 million – that's how much it costs to keep them up and looking good.”

The Academy Awards will be announced on 5 March.
